Siding often sustains the most damage during a storm. The leading LP® SmartSide® products now feature warranty coverage against hail damage. Here’s how LP SmartSide resists hail damage.
Tested for Hail Resistance
According to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), up to 5,411 hailstorms were recorded in the United States in 2015. This indicates a need for siding that can withstand such conditions. LP SmartSide is one of the first siding products to be tested by the National Wind Institute at their Debris Impact Facility, located in Texas Tech University
LP SmartSide lap siding outperformed comparable fiber cement and vinyl siding in these tests. LP SmartSide didn’t show signs of impact damage when hit by simulated 1.75-inch hailstones deployed at 81 miles per hour. In comparison, fiber cement siding showed dents up to 0.201 inches deep after being hit by hailstones of the same size at 74 miles per hour. Vinyl siding fared worse, showing fractures after being hit by 1.25-inch hailstones at 57 miles per hour
Advantages of LP® SmartSide®
Combined with an impact-resistant roofing system, storm doors and storm shutters, you can have the peace of mind knowing that your home will require minimal to no repairs when hit by hail when you use this siding.
In addition to lap siding, LP SmartSide is also available as shingles and shakes, panel and vertical siding, and soffit. You can choose from a wide selection of colors, textures and profiles that will fit any exterior design. LP SmartSide is lightweight and is one of the easiest exterior materials we have used for installation.
